Start preparing for the Best Buy Scholarship so that when it comes time, you will be ready to apply.  So, what is the Best Buy Scholarship all about? Although Best Buy is known for selling electronic products, the company also takes the time to recognize local teens and wants to help them develop technology skills.

Through the Best Buy Children’s Foundation, the company wants to help teens achieve their educational goals by providing funds for college. Each year, the program awards scholarships in students in grades 9-12 who live in the United States and Puerto Rico who plan to attend college. The criteria for being selected as a recipient includes: the students participation in community activities, volunteerism as well work experience. Funds of $1000 will be awarded to as many as 1,200 entrants. The Best Buy Scholarship program in 1999 and has provided approximately $19.7 million in scholarship funds.

Shopping for the Best Buy Scholarship

The scholarships are for one year of college enrollment and are not renewable. Provisional recipients will be notified in March of each year. At that time, they will be required to provide additional academic information, as well as their community activities and volunteerism. The finalists are notified in May of each year. The scholarship checks are then made payable to the student’s college but mailed to the student’s home. The funds must be used for the fall semester and cannot be deferred for future semesters. The application for the 2013 scholarships will be available for submission in late December, 2012. So what can you do right now to make yourself a viable candidate for the scholarship? Here are some suggestions:

  • • Leadership in school activities
  • • Volunteer in your community – The American Red Cross has a division that is youth oriented and teaches teens about disaster relief work.
  • • Soup Kitchens/Food Pantry – Your local food pantry or soup kitchen is probably in need of an extra set of hands to serve food or wash dishes, especially during the holiday months.
  • • Habitat For Humanity – Work for this organization and help build houses for local families.
  • • Local Library – Volunteer to work at your local library shelving books.
  • • Animal Shelters – If you love animals, volunteer to work at a shelter, caring for the animals.
  • • Hospital Volunteers – You can read and play games with the sick children.
  • • Community Gardens – If you love plants, you can work in a community garden planting fruits and vegetables.

These are just some ideas that will help you prepare for submitting you application to the Best Buy Scholarship and will probably make you a winner.
