Commonwealth Scholarship

The Commonwealth Scholarship began in 1959. Since then, it has distributed aid to 27,000 people. The scholarship is a program that facilitates international study. Member governments offer scholarships and fellowships to members of other Commonwealth countries. It is up to the members to decide whether or not to offer awards, how much to offer, and what the requirements are for receiving an award.

A variety of countries participate in the Commonwealth scholarship. For instance, Jamaica offers one scholarship each year for Masters or PhD study and Malaysia offers up to ten scholarships each year for Masters or PhD study. Some countries require that you attend a specific school to receive the scholarship. For instance, Singapore offers two scholarships at The National University of Singapore, for it’s Graduate School of Integrative Sciences and Engineering. The United Kingdom offers seven different kinds of Commonwealth Scholarships, for PhD research, Masters study, and various sorts of rewards for those working at universities in developing countries.

The Commonwealth Scholarship Offers Opportunities All AroundCommonwealth Scholarship

In 2009, the CSFP endowment was established. This endowment fund supports scholarships from low and middle income Commonwealth countries, such as Kenya and Tanzania. It was established to mark the 50th anniversary of the Commonwealth Scholarship, and is under the patronage of HRH The Prince of Wales. It’s main aim is to help these countries develop, by sending international talent to work and study in them.

The United Kingdom keeps a record of all the Commonwealth scholars they have funded. The total is around 17,000.  It is quite interesting to see what those who were Commonwealth scholars are doing now. They are involved in pretty much every field, from environmental work to physics. These scholars got an opportunity that they might not have gotten otherwise, and have run with it. Commonwealth scholars are men and women, off all races and ages. Their work is often inspiring.

If you are interested in doing Masters or PhD work abroad, it is worth it to see if the country you would like to study in is offering Commonwealth scholarships. They have provided great opportunities to many individuals throughout the years, in all sorts of fields. If you’re not particularly picky about where you study, it is even better, because then you can decide based on what sort of program you would like to study, and not purely on location. If you’re interested in studying abroad, make sure you check out the Commonwealth Scholarship today or other study abroad scholarships!
