Fulbright ScholarshipFulbright Scholarship

The Fulbright Scholarship program is designed to encourage cultural experiences and education among youths in the United States that they would not typically encounter in day to day life. Senator J. William Fulbright from Arkansas introduced legislation in 1946 that established this program through the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA).

The Fulbright Program is a flagship international exchange program sponsoring roughly 8,000 new grants each year totaling over 300,000 funded students worldwide since it began over sixty years ago. Students are selected based on their academic merit, leadership potential, and research interests. Currently, this program operates in over 155 countries around the world and is sponsored through corporations, foreign governments, and various foundations in the United States and abroad.

Earning a Fulbright Scholarship is A Big Achievement

There are several types of grants available to students through the Fulbright Program. For students in the United States, these include the Fulbright U.S. Student Program (offers fellowships for students to study overseas for a period of one year), Fulbright-mtvu Fellowships (allows four students to study music abroad and conduct independent research on a musical topic of their choice to earn a Fulbright Scholarship), Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship (students serve in professional positions in foreign government ministries working in the public sector), and Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (pre-doctoral students can research non-western foreign languages and areas).

For non-U.S. students coming to study in the United States, they have the option to apply for the Fulbright Foreign Student Program (graduate students can conduct research and study in the U.S.), Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program (young English teachers are granted the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of the American society and culture), and the International Fulbright Science and Technology Award (offered to support doctoral study in the United States in fields of science, technology, engineering, or related fields). This is just a small segment of all the Fulbright Scholarship Program has to offer. More on finding easy scholarships

Fulbright Scholarship Giving Opportunities to those that Earn It

There are additional awards available to U.S. scholars wishing to study or further their career overseas as well as awards to non-U.S. scholars wishing to do the same in the states. There are even awards available to mid-career professionals wishing to enhance their cultural understanding either abroad or in the United States. One program of particular note is the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program. This Fulbright Scholarship program is dedicated to offering support for entire groups to conduct overseas projects in research, training, and curriculum development in contemporary foreign languages.

Teachers, students, and faculty work towards a solution for a common endeavor by means of seminars, group exploration or study, or advanced rigorous language programs. In the end, there are multiple routes to becoming a Fulbright scholarship awardee as long as a person has the drive and desire to be a multicultural learner.
