The Gilman Scholarship

The Gilman scholarship is a valuable opportunity available for low-income students seeking to participate in study abroad programs. One of the greatest opportunities for college and university students is the chance to study abroad. Whether a student chooses to study abroad for a quarter, a semester or an entire school year, they’ll be immersed in a foreign country.

This is an unparalleled opportunity to learn and understand the language, food, sounds, sights and customs of a country you might not have otherwise visited. Because study abroad is recognized as a valuable opportunity, scholarships, such as the Gilman scholarship, are available to support students who choose to embark on this wonderful journey.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program was founded in 2000, through the International Academic Opportunity Act. It provides financial assistance to low-income students who participate in study abroad programs. To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be enrolled in a two-year or four-year college or university and be a recipient of the Federal Pell Grant. The goal of the scholarship is to provide opportunities to students who might otherwise be prevented from participating in study abroad programs because of financial limitations. First awarded in 2001, the Gilman scholarship has been extremely successful in sending students abroad.

The scholarship has sent over 9,700 students, enrolled in 950 colleges and universities in the United States to 125 countries around the world. The scholarship application process usually begins in January and runs through May, and requires coordination with your college or university’s study abroad and financial aid advisors. Applications for the scholarship open in January and are due in March. A panel reviews and considers each application in April. Finally, students are notified whether they have received the award in May. A list of awardees is also listed on the scholarship’s Web site. Because the scholarship is so prestigious, there are many requirements that students must be sure they meet. The applying student must complete an online application form and upload copies of his/her transcripts and complete two essays. In addition, the study abroad advisor and the financial aid advisor from the student’s university must certify that the student is indeed eligible for the scholarship.

Because there are many components required to successfully apply to the scholarship, and the deadlines are not extendible, it is important that students are organized to ensure they stay on schedule. It may be advisable to seek additional help. The effort, however, is completely worth it. Studying abroad is often one of the most memorable experiences students take with them from college. The Gilman scholarship ensures that all students are able to take advantage of such a fantastic opportunity.
