HEC Scholarship

The HEC (Higher Education Commission) Scholarship is a joint effort between the HEC of Pakistan and the University of Cambridge. The scholarship is only available to Pakistani nationals. The intention is to help build a variety of fields in Pakistan, such as engineering and technology. The HEC scholarship is intended to be given to those wishing to pursue their PhD at the University of Cambridge, either in a PhD program or a Master’s leading to PhD program, though there is a preference to those going directly into a PhD program. To be eligible, candidates must have a minimum of sixteen years of education, a maximum of two second divisions throughout their academic career, a minimum cumulative academic marks as per the HEC Academic Evaluation Formula, and no other scholarships. There is also a maximum age that the applicant may be. This age is forty years for Faculty members of Public Sector Universities and employees of the Public Sector R&D Organizations and thirty five for all other applicants.

The HEC Scholarship Provides Funding For Pakistani Nationals Looking To Pursue A PhD

The HEC Scholarship has a few things required for application. Proof of admission to Cambridge must be provided as well as attested photocopies of educational testimonials and CNIC. A curriculum vitae or resume must also be provided. A statement of purpose for pursuing higher studies is also required, with a maximum of 500 words. Applicants must also present a research proposal as well as a deposit.

There are five HEC Scholarships available, and all are awarded based on merit as opposed to financial need. All fields are eligible for this scholarship, except those where clinical-rate fees are charged. If the applicant is in a Masters leading to PhD program, the funding they will receive a maximum of four years of funding. Those who receive this scholarship must agree to work in Pakistan for five years upon completion of their degree.

The purpose of the HEC Scholarship is to help build the academic and research & development communities in Pakistan, as well as build up the economy. The hope is that by funding the education of Pakistani nationals, and having them work in Pakistan for five years, minimum, that Pakistan will grow as a nation.
