The HOPE Scholarship Program

The HOPE scholarship program is a truly inspiring system of scholarships for college students that has the potential to catch on as a nationwide trend.  The HOPE Scholarship Program stands for Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally, and indeed it does just that.  The HOPE Scholarship program works specifically in the state of Georgia and uses 100% revenue from the Georgia lottery to be able to give scholarships to Georgian college students.  Many students have been helped significantly by the fund since 1993.  The HOPE Scholarship Fund has provided students with between $21.4 million and $748.1 million dollars a year since then.

The HOPE Scholarship program is also wonderful because it is a merit based scholarship.  This means that while determining eligibility for students, their income on a whole isn’t looked at.  Scholarships are given based entirely on grades and standardized test scores, such as the ACT and SAT.  Indeed student applicants need to have a 3.0 GPA coming out of high school or a home schooling program.  They also need to score in the 85th percentile or even higher on SAT or ACT testing.

Hope Scholarship

To continue receiving the scholarship while in university or college, students must continue to receive a 3.0 GPA or higher in addition to taking classes full  or part time (around 25 to 45 hours a week of course work or more).  The HOPE Scholarship Program will cover $1800 dollars a semester or more and may include paying the full tuition every semester or paying part time semesters for students, depending on their situations.  Every application is reviewed situationally.  Applications can be submitted online or through paper mail, once a student is assured that they qualify to attend their university in mind.

Although the HOPE Scholarship Program is only for Georgia, other states are using it as a model for practice and it is expanding nationwide,  even if only on a state by state basis.  These include the South Carolina Education Lottery, the Kentucky Education Excellence Scholarship Program, the Tennessee HOPE Scholarship and the Bright Futures Scholarship of Florida.  The HOPE Scholarship program wants to give academically bright students who perform on a superior level the opportunity to afford a college education, which they might not have otherwise been able to do.

The other stated goal of Georgia’s program is to give an incentive to these students to stay in the state instead of going to universities in other states, including students that would be able to pay for their education.  The HOPE Scholarship Program has wonderful ideals and provides a real service to the students of the state of Georgia.  The HOPE Scholarship program is inspiring and is being adopted in various states nationwide; it really helps Georgian students who might not be able to otherwise afford their education.
