Juniata’s left-handed scholarships was established by Mary and Frederick Beckley, two former Juniata students, in 1979. Frederick and Mary ironically met because of their left handedness. During a tennis class, Frederick and Mary were paired up because the tennis coaches happened to believe the notion that left handed individuals typically excel in many areas, including sports. Oddly enough, the age old belief that left handedness commonly provides individuals with an advantage in many areas, such as sports and art, may not be entirely without reason.

Historically, you can find many examples of left handed individuals excelling in many of these areas. A few famous left handers include Albert Einstein, Bill Clinton, Bruce Willis, Jim Henson, and Colin Powell. However, whether or not this has anything to do with being left handed is still open to debate.
