Marathon Oil Scholarship

The Marathon Oil Scholarship is geared towards those who are already in college. To be eligible, you must be a sophomore majoring in Accounting, Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geology/Geosciences, Information Technology (IT/MIS), Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, or Supply Chain Management (Management). You may also be a senior enrolling in a Master’s degree program in Geology, Geophysics or Petroleum Engineering. You must be of Hispanic American, African American, Asian Pacific Islander American, or American Indian/Alaskan Native heritage, as well as a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident of the United States of America. You also must have filled out of a FAFSA. The final requirement is a 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale.

There are multiple rewards for this scholarship. The scholarship is generally up to 15,000 dollars for one year. However, selected students may receive two years of scholarship money. The other part of this scholarship is the opportunity to participate in an 8-10 week summer internship. This internship may be paid, but that is not guaranteed. In addition to the internship, those who are selected for this scholarship may be paired with a Marathon Oil Corporation employee. This employee will serve as a professional mentor.

The Marathon Oil Scholarship generally opens for applicants in August, and closes in November. Interviews are conducted in December, and winners are notified in March. The committee takes the month of February to decide on the final recipients. Awards are distributed in Fall of the next year, after verification of enrollment is provided.

The Marathon Oil Scholarship  has some very specific requirements. However, if you know what you want to do with the rest of your life and fit the requirements it is the perfect opportunity. Perhaps the most valuable aspect of this scholarship is the internship experience. In this day and age, work experience is the best way to break into any industry. The addition of a professional mentor makes this even better. Many college graduates feel a bit lost upon completion of their degree. Having someone who knows the industry is an invaluable tool.
