SMART Scholarship

The SMART Scholarship was established by the Department of Defense in order to fund the education of America’s future scientists and engineers. SMART stands for Science, Mathematics & Research for Transformation. This scholarship is distributed across all levels of higher education, from undergraduate to Master’s to doctorate education. The award for this scholarship is a cash award between $25,000 and $41,000 per year, depending on educational experience, full tuition and related education expenses, a health insurance reimbursement allowance, and a book allowance. There are also summer internships available for multi year participants.

In order to be eligible for the SMART Scholarship, applicants must be citizens of the United States. Those who hold permanent resident status are not eligible. Applicants seeking undergraduate awards must in enrolled in a United States college or university. Applicants must also be able to receive and hold a security clearance. This is because after graduation, applicants must spend some time working at a Department of Defense laboratory or agency. The length of time they must spend working there is directly related to how much aid they received from this scholarship. Graduates are expected to begin their service within thirty days of completion of their degree.

The SMART Scholarship Provides Science and Technology Scholars With Funding

The application process for the SMART scholarship is a little bit intensive. Applicants are required to input pretty much everything about their achievements, academic or otherwise. The application includes a place where you can select where you would prefer to be placed during your service with the Department of Defense. Applicants may choose up to three services and up to three geographical locations. However, there is no guarantee that you will be placed at any of your choices.

This SMART scholarship is an amazing way to get your degree paid for, as well as many other benefits. The change for an internship during your college career is a wonderful opportunity, because it means that you will get work experience before graduation, something that is very valuable in the work force. Also, some schools require that you complete internships to graduate, so it is nice to have that taken care of. Job placement after college is also a great opportunity. It is a benefit to know that you will have a job after college, and not have to worry about finding one at the last minute. Of course, it is a little disappointing if you get placed somewhere you’d rather not be, but the commitment to the job is temporary, and your experience there will help you greatly in finding another job once your service is completed and the help of the SMART scholarship will not be regretted.
