Are you a Star Trek fanatic? If you answered yes, you may want to consider becoming a member of Starfleet, an organization funded around the mutual love for Star Trek. That’s right, the sci-fi T.V. show created by Gene Roddenberry and with Captain Kirk and Spock. So, what does joining a fan club have to do with getting free money for college? Well, by becoming a member of the International Start Trek Fan Association, you gain eligibility to ten different unusual scholarships that only Starfleet members can access.

These unusual scholarships that are currently offered by Starfleet include scholarships for individuals seeking to study medicine, education, and engineering. Don’t see your major listed? Well, there is no need to fret; they thought of that too. If your field of study is not listed, Starfleet has designated a miscellaneous category for any applicants that may not conform to any of the other categories.

Ever since 1990, Starfleet has presented monetary unusual scholarships to active Starfleet members who are attending community colleges, four-year colleges, most technical schools, junior colleges and universities or graduate school. In order to apply, first and foremost, applicants must have been a Starfleet member for at least one year prior to applying. For members who qualify, all you have to do is simply submit your completed application packet (entry form, your essay, references, and most recent transcripts) by email or postal mail. Entries are accepted from January 1st through June 30th of each year.

And if a $500 dollar scholarship wasn’t a good enough deal, Starfleet also provides Star Trek fans with an opportunity to meet like-minded individuals, give back to their communities, and offers a variety of resources that you won’t find in any other fan club. Not too shabby for worshiping Gene Roddenberry right?

However, there is one catch. In order to become a member of Starfleet, you must pay a yearly membership fee of $15 dollars. Although as a non-profit corporation, Starfleet tries to maintain low cost membership fees, while still maintaining quality and a positive experience for all of its members. Also, in addition to membership, members also receive a subscription to STARFLEET Communiqué; a bi-monthly publication that brings readers the latest news in the world of Star Trek.

Most scholarships cannot guarantee that applicants will win, but how many scholarships still make it worthwhile to apply to, even if you do not win? This unusual, Star Trek, based scholarship does. By applying to any of these unusual scholarships, you not only get an opportunity to win some cash to pay for school, but you also gain an opportunity to become a part of an organization that loves Star Trek too.
