Walmart Foundation Replaces the Sam Walton Community Scholarship

The Walmart Foundation has replaced the Sam Walton Community Scholarship for Walmart associates, dependents, and other community members. The Walmart Foundation has awarded $10 million in the last school year alone and is committed to making the escalating costs of a college education more affordable. Walmart has helped thousands of associates and their dependents towards realizing their goals of higher education. With the two newest programs, Walmart is focusing specifically on the needs of employees and their families.

The first new program is called the Walmart Associate Scholarship and is available to Walmart associates in the United States who demonstrate financial need. Associates from any division of Walmart and Sam’s Club are welcome to apply for the program and funds are available for many education programs including certificates, associates, bachelors, and graduate programs including Masters of Business Administration degrees.

Applicants must attend a recognized, accredited college or university and must have completed six months of time on the job before the scholarship launch date for the award period of application.

The second program is the Walmart Dependent Scholarship and is a $13,000 scholarship paid out over four years for dependents of Walmart or Sam’s Club associates. The associates must be based in the United States and  prove financial need. Applications must also have a 2.0 high school GPA to qualify. These programs are both renewable (as of January 2012, new scholars only); the renewal process is outlined at the Walmart  corporate website.

Students previously awarded scholarships from the Walton Family Foundation Scholarship will continue to receive payments until the end of their award term (as previously announced) and the Sam Walton Community Scholarship is no longer available. The Walmart Foundation periodically adds or removes programs for scholarships in an effort to maximize the impact to help more students achieve success. The foundation also has commitments in military support, disaster relief, and hunger relief, but maintains the scholarship programs as a separate fund.

Walmart is committed to excellence in its employees and the Walmart Foundation has dedicated these awards to demonstrate that commitment. The community is better served by employees and their families when everyone has the opportunity to achieve more through a certificate or degree program. Prospective students who had considered applying for the Sam Walton Community Scholarship should look into these two new programs and check the Walmart corporate website for the most up-to-date information.
